Ballet Is Huge in Cuba
You’ve probably seen videos about Cuba where people are dancing in the street. If you watched Conan Without Borders, then you probably know just how important boogying down is in Cuban culture. What Conan didn’t tell us is that ballet is a pretty big deal in Cuba.
The love for everything ballet started in the 1940s when the legendary ballerina, Alicia Alfonso, founded her own ballet academy. Things were rough for Alicia at first, but after receiving government support from Fidel Castro, her school skyrocketed in popularity. The Ballet Nacional de Cuba is one of the most prestigious dance schools in the world today.
