99% Literacy Rate
Despite being stuck in the stone age regarding computer usage, Cuba is pretty on-top of the literacy game. The island nation has a literacy rate of about 99%, which places it solidly in the top 25 countries with the highest number of readers. Not too shabby, if you ask us.
What most surprising is that the government in the 1960s had a helping hand in boosting the number of people who could read. Castro declared 1961 as the Year of Education and even dispatched “literacy brigades” into rural areas to build educational facilities and train teachers.
