Monopoly Was Huge Pre-Castro
The boardgame Monopoly is known to drive wedges between families and friends. It’s a pretty horrendous game that teaches us that relationships mean nothing as long as you can purchase Boardwalk. Believe it or not, Monopoly was pretty big in Cuba, despite its ties with the communist party.
We say was because when Fidel Castro took over, he banned the game from the island nation. He allegedly didn’t want people to busy themselves with learning capitalistic methods of enriching themselves while benefiting from another’s misery. Also, if the rumors are true, Cuba needed all the field workers they could have, so Monopoly, as well as other forms of distractions, were banned outright.
