One of the Last Countries
Long after the Transatlantic Slave Trade ended, Cuba was still benefiting from slave labor. Until the 1880s, people in Cuba could legally own slaves, a full 15 years or so after the USA got rid of slavery. It wasn’t until 1886 that the Spanish government finally put an end to the inhumane practice for good.
What’s strange is that Spain, the country that claimed rights over Cuba, abolished slavery back in 1811. It’s probably because Spain and its trade partners were benefitting from cheap Cuban natural resources that they didn’t make the abolition decree for another 70 years or so.
