Television is our window into the world, teaching us about science, medicine, and even survival tactics. However, many of the “facts” we learned from our favorite shows don’t exactly reflect reality. These misconceptions can lead to misunderstandings and even dangerous situations. Let’s look at some popular TV beliefs and see how they differ from actual science.
#1: CPR works almost every time
On shows like ER and Grey’s Anatomy, we see CPR bringing people back to life instantly, and success seems guaranteed. The reality is much less glamorous because the American Heart Association reports that the survival rate for out-of-hospital CPR is only around 7–10%, and it increases slightly to 20–25% for those in hospitals.
