The iPod and the Abolition of Slavery
Steve Jobs transformed the world in 2001 when he launched the first version of the iPod, and you’d imagine it was years since slavery was abolished, but you’re mistaken. There was enough storage to carry between 1,000 to 2,000 tracks, and the first iPod had a battery life of up to 10 hours. Today this piece of technology is on show in museums.
Five years later, in 2006, the sixth generation of iPods was introduced and slavery in Mauritania was abolished. Mauritania was the only place on earth where slavery was still legal and, while legally criminalized, Mauritania is considered to be the last stronghold of slavery.
