#21: The United States Has 48 States
Geography textbooks published before 1959 presented America as a neat collection of 48 states, and many remained in circulation long after Alaska and Hawaii joined the union. Teachers had to add verbal corrections to their printed materials, and map companies scrambled to update their products.
