#7: Feet and Miles for Me, Thanks
Look, I try not to be an ugly American. I try to be respectful of other people’s cultures, and I am keenly aware of all of the ways that the United States falls short of being as great as some of its residents want to believe it is. But even so, a part of me cannot help snickering in evil glee when people outside the US start complaining about our refusal to adopt the metric system.
I think it’s just the fact that it seems to really tick some people off way beyond the bounds of what is reasonable—somehow, that amuses me, and the more non-Americans hate on the metric system, the funnier it gets. Sorry, you people who pour way too much energy into obsessing over America’s measurement system: I don’t think it will change anytime soon.
