#9: Queue Who?

Controversial opinion: the word “queue” is one of the most unnecessary words in the English language. We’ll wait for someone to challenge us! We know we’re right. By unnecessary, we mean unnecessarily long. It’s pronounced “Q” so why does it need those extra u’s and e’s? Just because a line can be long doesn’t mean the word has to be!

The word queue is actually a French word meaning “tail,” which seems an appropriate and whimsical way to describe a line. The first U is in there because the letter Q is usually followed by a U. Don’t ask us why – that’s just how it is. *shrugs* As for the other three vowels at the end of “queue,” it’s hard to say why they’re there. We’re just not going to question it.
