Homonyms can be quite confusing. They are words that are spelled the same or sound the same but have two (or more) different meanings, such as “read” and “red.” It sounds exactly the same, but they are two different words. And there are many, many more examples of homonyms in the English language.

The thing is, while this can certainly throw you for a loop, it isn’t unique to English. There are other languages that have homonyms. We’re not arguing that English isn’t a confusing language, but we’re saying every language can be complicated in its own way.
