#21: Say-ed or Said?

Here is yet another Twitter user who took to the World Wide Web to air her grievance with the English language. She has an issue with the fact that “said” and “paid” don’t rhyme. She insists they should rhyme because they are spelled the same. She sounds so passionate about this issue, so she may start a petition to change the pronunciation.

We can’t blame her for feeling frustrated about this. Looking at the spelling, they technically should rhyme. This combination of letters, however, has more than one way of being pronounced. “Said” and “paid” sound different because of the mish-mash of different versions of English that have come together over time. Pronunciations from Old and Middle English have muddled together in our modern-day English, and it’s causing a lot of confusion, if we’re being honest.
