Most people know The Sound of Music for its catchy songs and heartwarming story, but the real von Trapp family’s life was quite different from what made it to the screen. The movie took plenty of creative shortcuts to keep things simple and dramatic. From changed names and invented romances to a mountain escape that never happened, the truth behind the famous musical is even more fascinating. Here are a few nuggets of truth about what really happened to Maria, Georg, and the singing family that inspired one of the world’s most beloved classic films.
#1: The family was even bigger than the movie showed
The von Trapp family didn’t flee Austria with seven children as shown in the movie. In reality, there were nine kids when they escaped the country, with Maria pregnant at the time with their tenth child.

Seven of those children were from Georg’s first marriage, while the rest were Maria’s. The movie simplified the numbers to keep the story manageable, but the real family was even larger than audiences imagined.
