#9: Oreo
Before anyone debated the proper way to eat one, the Oreo had to find its audience. The cookie was first produced in 1912 at a bakery in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood and initially sold in bulk tins. Its name and presentation evolved over the years, with “Oreo Sandwich” appearing by 1921, but the recognizable pairing of dark chocolate wafers and a sweet filling was already in place. What happened afterward feels almost cultural rather than merely commercial.
