#13: Doublemint Gum
Streetcars rattled through cities, silent movies filled theaters, and Doublemint Gum was new. Wrigley introduced the gum in the United States in 1914, beginning the long life of a brand that would eventually become recognizable far beyond American candy counters. The green package is so closely associated with 20th-century advertising that it can be easy to place its origin decades too late. However, Doublemint belongs to the pre-radio era. Its endurance also says something about the appeal of simplicity.
