We all have our travel memories. Maybe it’s a perfect plate of pasta in Rome or a fresh baguette in Paris. But sometimes the most memorable taste is a sweet one, discovered in a little neighborhood bakery. We’re not talking about the desserts you see on every tourist menu. These are the local favorites, the ones with stories baked into them. They’re the treats that give you a real taste of a place, and some are good enough to plan a whole trip around.
#1: Pastel de Tentúgal
This delicate pastry comes from a 16th-century Portuguese convent. Carmelite nuns in the small town of Tentúgal created the recipe, using countless egg yolks left over from starching their habits with the whites. The result is a paper-thin, flaky wrapper holding a rich, sweet filling of egg yolk cream. For centuries, the recipe was a closely guarded secret.
