#18: Nagoro – Japan

The remote mountain village of Nagoro, on the island of Shikoku, is not haunted by ghosts, but by memories. As the population dwindled from death and relocation, a returning resident named Ayano Tsukimi felt the emptiness. So, starting in 2002, she began to repopulate the town herself. She started creating life-size dolls, each one representing a former neighbor. She placed them around the village: in the school, by the roadside, in the fields. Today, more than 350 of these uncanny figures inhabit Nagoro, far outnumbering the few living residents.
