#11: Island of the Dolls – Mexico
Just south of Mexico City, in the canals of Xochimilco, exists the real-life nightmare for anyone with pediophobia. In the mid-20th century, a man named Julián Santana Barrera began hanging old, discarded dolls from the trees. He claimed he was doing it to appease the spirit of a young girl who had drowned nearby. For decades, he collected and displayed the dolls, creating an accidental, macabre art installation known as the Island of Dolls. The dolls, with their missing limbs and blank eyes, now number in the hundreds. In a chilling final chapter to the story, Barrera himself was found drowned in the very same canal in 2001.
