Road markings can be surprisingly easy to misremember, especially when their meanings were learned for a written test many years ago. A single solid white line generally tells drivers that changing lanes is discouraged in that location, often because the roadway is approaching a merge, exit, intersection, or another area where extra caution is useful. It is not automatically the same kind of absolute barrier as a double solid line. Under national pavement-marking standards, double solid white lines indicate that crossing them is prohibited, while a single solid white line carries a less absolute message, although state and local laws still matter.
