Few maneuvers demonstrate the importance of local rules quite as neatly as the U-turn. One town may allow it at an intersection when the road is clear, while another may post signs prohibiting the same maneuver. State laws can add restrictions involving visibility, business districts, divided highways, or proximity to hills and curves. Even where a U-turn is technically allowed, the driver still has to yield and complete it without creating a hazard for approaching traffic, cyclists, or pedestrians. That makes the familiar “No U-Turn” sign only part of the story.
