Créme brulee is a rich, creamy custard that’s been baked until it’s firm and golden on top. The name means “baked cream” in French, which is fitting since the custard is baked in a special pan. The word “creme” is French for “cream,” and “brulee” is French for “baked,” which is what you’re doing when you bake the custard until it’s firm and crispy on top.

Now, we wouldn’t recommend trying to crack the caramelized top of this bowl of crème brulee because, well, it’s not actually crème brulee. This is actually a huge vat of liquid metal, which would probably melt your spoon and your arm if you get too close.
