This One Is A Bit Scary
It’s a bit disturbing, to be honest. During a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City in 1972, Laslo Taut, an Australian man who was most likely struggling with mental disorder, paid a visit. It is not uncommon for a large number of people to go to Vatican City.

When he took a hammer in his hand and hit Michaelangelo’s Pieta statue fifteen times while yelling “I am Jesus Christ, resurrected from the dead,” it was horrifying to see. Laslo was 33 years old at the time of his death, which was believed to be the age at which Jesus passed away. Instead of being sentenced to jail, he was assigned to a therapist for treatment. Despite the fact that no one knows how much it will cost to restore the monument, it was insured for $10 million in 1964, which is approximately comparable to $81 million now.
