There are certain places that evoke a childlike wonder for us. Whether it’s from the lighthearted nostalgia of youth or bringing our families there as adults, certain places just make us feel more lighthearted and bring out the child in us. Yet, even those warm, fuzzy feelings can’t always save places from desertion. In time, many of the beloved amusement parks we visited as kids have been left abandoned and remain shells of their former selves. Here are just a handful of beloved amusement parks around the country lost to the ages.
#1: AstroWorld (Houston, TX)
Houston was once one of the first major metropolitan areas to build a theme park. When Six Flags AstroWorld opened in 1968, it was a stellar experience for area and visiting families. This popular park even had its own set of mascots, which were introduced in 1972, like the park mascot Marvel McFey, Percy Penguin, and Samantha Skunk. The costumes were even built by legendary Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump. Unfortunately, an acquisition from Six Flags didn’t improve park attendance, and it was eventually closed, picked through, and demolished from 2005-2006.
