#6: Pressurized Asbestos-Lined Steam Pipes (RMS Titanic)
Even the world’s most famous shipwreck, the RMS Titanic, holds threats beyond its depth. When the ship was built, asbestos was a wonder material used to insulate its massive steam pipes and boilers. After the ship sank in 1912, that insulation started to degrade. Deep-sea conservators know to avoid handling it. The friable asbestos fibers are contained by the water, but if brought to the surface and allowed to dry, they would become airborne. It’s a severe respiratory hazard waiting to be released from its watery grave.
