The X-Files rarely worried about being comforting, but “Home” went several steps further. Mulder and Scully investigate a disturbing family living in rural Pennsylvania, and the episode’s oppressive atmosphere, violent imagery, and twisted domestic secrets made it infamous. Fox initially kept it out of regular rerun rotation, which only strengthened its legend. For younger viewers who discovered it accidentally, this was less “monster of the week” and more “sleep with the hallway light on” forever.
