#8: Loch Ness Monster sightings
Scotland’s Loch Ness is deep, cold, and visually perfect for a mystery. Long before modern cameras and tourist shops, stories of something unusual in the water had been passed around the region. The modern wave of Loch Ness Monster sightings took off in 1933, when reports began drawing newspaper attention. A year later, the famous “surgeon’s photograph” appeared to show a long-necked creature rising from the loch. That photo helped Nessie become world famous, even though it was later exposed as a hoax.
