#28: The True Meaning Behind Cinco de Mayo

Contrary to common belief in the United States, Cinco de Mayo does not celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls on September 16. Instead, it commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Although the French eventually overcame Mexico in subsequent conflicts, the Battle of Puebla served as a morale boost for the Mexican army and symbolized resilience and national pride. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico and various parts of the United States with festivals, parades, and cultural events.
