It probably won’t come as a surprise, but everything I know about trials and courtrooms comes from movies and TV. As we’ve learned from movies, lawyers often advise their clients to say nothing and give as little information as they can – especially when they know (or suspect) they’re guilty.

This person clearly didn’t get the memo from their lawyer. Or maybe they did, and they decided to follow their heart anyway. Or maybe that’s a thing lawyers only say in movies? Maybe in real life, they advise their clients to speak out and appeal to the kindness of the judge and jury? For some reason, I find that hard to believe.
