You may not be aware that the gummy sweets you’re so fond of are actually made with a substance called gelatin. That’s what makes them actually gummy, like jelly. This substance, however, comes from animal collagen, and the colonists took full advantage of this clever ingredient.
Never keen on letting any of their livestock go to waste, they would make something called calves foot jelly which involved boiling calves feet in water or milk, straining the liquid, and using either savory spices or sweet flavors to make a cold set dessert.
