Wine
For the early colonials, drinks of choice included perry, applejack, and rum. In 1770 over 140 rum distilleries existed in the colonies, and they produced 4.8 million gallons of the tipple each year. As well as these options, richer colonials also imported wine from various places in Europe, with the fortified Madeira being particularly popular.
They did, however, also start to make their own wine, using a native grape called muscadine, and this was encouraged due to increasing taxes on imports from Europe. Nowadays, pretty much every American state produces its own wine, with a very good reputation all over the world.
