Lobster
Nowadays we consider lobster to be something of a luxury. If you order it in a restaurant then you must be doing alright for yourself, or you’re celebrating something pretty big and important. Things were a little different in colonial America, however, for the red crustacean.
In the North American colonies, seafood was abundant, meaning pretty much anyone could feed themselves on mussels, oysters, and lobster. Because anyone could, the rich didn’t want to, and so lobsters were reserved for the poor and lower classes of society, often used to feed prisoners and slaves cheaply.
