Plum cake
Most countries with plum trees have traditional recipes for plum cake, and American colonials were no exception. The US version of a plum cake didn’t just contain plums, but also other types of fruit. It would have looked more like a modern mixed fruitcake really, with added molasses, spice, currants, and raisins.
The interesting thing about the American plum cake, however, was when it was traditionally served. To our colonial ancestors, Election Day was almost as important as Thanksgiving, and they made it a national holiday, serving the plum cake to celebrate with their friends and neighbors.
