Coffee
So, once this caffeinated lifeline had been cut off, the American’s had to find something else to drink. They turned to coffee which welcomed them with open arms. Coffee houses did exist throughout the colonial cities and towns, but the preparation of coffee was a lot more time-consuming.
Rather than being an everyman drink, coffee became a bit of a status symbol in colonial America, despite not being as expensive as tea. The time it took to prepare meant that those working long laborious days just couldn’t fit it in, and it was definitely a drink for the middle and upper classes for quite a while.
