Ambergris
Moving several steps down the attractiveness ladder from eel here, our colonial ancestors were also partial to a bit of whale vomit. No, seriously. Whale vomit has been a key ingredient in perfumes for hundreds of years, but in the 1700s and 1800s, it was also found in many popular dishes.
Ambergris, as it was known, could be found in drinks, or even mixed into hot chocolate. It was and still remains, a valuable substance because only a few sperm whales produce it. You can find it floating on the surface of the ocean, should you want to spice up your own hot chocolate.
