Humble pie
You may have heard the phrase “they had to eat humble pie” thrown about. It’s usually employed when someone has been taken down a peg or two, or been forced to admit that they were wrong after making a big deal about knowing what they were talking about. Well, there is a reason for the phrase that begins in the kitchen.
Humble pie, sometimes called Umble Pie, was a common dish amongst poor households. It was what you would call a pie made from whatever was leftover from an animal that had been killed, combined with apples, sugar, and spices. These last ingredients were mainly to cover up the taste.
