Turtle soup
Hands up if you’ve seen Finding Nemo. If so, then maybe don’t read this next paragraph, unless you want to be weeping heavy sobs for the fate of Squirt’s dad and his turtle friends. The colonists ate a lot of turtles, partly because they were very prevalent at this point in history.
Now that more have been targeted, and industry has built up around the coastlines of the original colonies, finding turtles for your soup is much harder, and possibly illegal. At the time, however, it was a very popular dish for the rich, and they didn’t have to worry about things like biodiversity, or cartoon clownfish.
