Edinburgh’s dramatic terrain shaped the city’s layout from the beginning. The historic Old Town developed along a high volcanic ridge descending from Edinburgh Castle. Its main street was joined by dozens of narrow, steep alleyways known as “closes.” With little room inside the medieval walls, residents built upward, producing some of the world’s earliest high-rise buildings.
