Cities That Were Built Without a Plan (And It Shows)

Lisbon’s urban history falls into two distinct chapters, divided by the massive earthquake of 1755. Downtown was destroyed, and planners rebuilt it on a strict, modern grid. Up on the hills, though, neighborhoods such as Alfama survived completely. Their old Moorish layout remains: steep, winding alleys, staircases, and tiled houses pressed tightly together.
