It’s A Hit
Lucky for Britney, Robyn turned down the song Hit Me Baby, which was later changed to …Baby One More Time. Written by Swedish music composer Max Martin, Jive Records was sure that …Baby One More Time would be a hit. Unlike Robyn, Britney loved the song and was eager to record it.
The song was released as Britney’s first single off of her debut album. The title of the song did cause some controversy though. Many people heard the song as normalizing domestic abuse. This was all cleared up when it was explained that “hit me” is actually Swedish slang for “call me.”
