55 Weird British Food Quirks the Rest of the World Can’t Wrap Their Heads Around

May 19, 2015 by Veronica Phillips

Piccalilli Pickle

This, right here, is a certified tongue twister (just try saying it really fast five times). This very British-sounding condiment is actually a mustard-based vegetable pickle that can be traced back to the 18th century. Speaking of vegetables, if there’s no cauliflower, it’s simply not an authentic piccalilli.

Other veggies include onions, gherkin, carrots, and even beans along with spices like turmeric, mustard powder, ginger, nutmeg, and more. It is the best pickle to have with pork pies and cold ham and is a great addition to sandwiches as well. You can either make your own or buy the trusty Heinz version.
