Welsh Laverbread
The tradition of strange food names is not unique to just the British but extends to their neighbors in Wales as well. Despite the name, Laverbread or “bara lawr” is not a kind of bread at all, it is actually a purée made from an edible seaweed called “slake.” The reddish brown seaweed is washed, cleaned, and boiled down till it transforms into a green pulp.
It is then pureed and served with shellfish or on hot, generously buttered toast. It is said to have a distinct texture and a salty taste and is pretty nutritious as well. Today it is described as the “Welshman’s caviar” and is widely enjoyed by many.
