55 Weird British Food Quirks the Rest of the World Can’t Wrap Their Heads Around

May 19, 2015 by Veronica Phillips

Bubble and Squeak

Another day, another funny-sounding dish name by the British. Bubble and squeak is made with cabbage, potatoes, and other vegetables that are panfried and served as a side dish. Back in the day, it also included meat, usually beef as it was made with leftovers from the Sunday roast. So, how did it get its unique name?

Apparently, it comes from the sound that the ingredients make when they’re being fried in the pan. Come to think of it, cabbage does make a squeaking noise when it’s being cooked. The potato holds all the ingredients together and if you like, you can add a fried egg on top to make it a wholesome, healthy breakfast.
