Scotch Eggs
Scotch eggs may not look like much but we can’t see how you can go wrong with them. They are soft or hard-boiled eggs encased in sausage meat which is then coated with breadcrumbs or oatmeal and deep-fried till golden. These have been around since the 18th century and made for the perfect picnic treat. Of course, these days you can get them everywhere including the pub, and enjoy them at any time of the day.
As for the name, it is thought to have come from “scorched” eggs, back when they were browned from cooking in an open fire. Now, you can even find trendier versions of this classic dish with black pudding or chorizo in the sausage mix, and duck or quail’s eggs in the middle.
