#4: Blockbuster
In the 1980s, video rental became a way for many of us to watch movies and play video games for cheap, and Blockbuster was at the top. Founded in 1985, it had over 9,000 stores at its peak. Now, there’s only one left in Bend, Oregon. What happened?
Netflix happened, along with Redbox and a bunch of other competitors, that made video rental stores obsolete. I miss Blockbuster as much as the next person, but those late fees could be brutal. And if a movie or game was hot, they never had it to rent. Blockbuster tried to compete with Netflix (known for its mail-in DVDs at the time) with its own version, but it was too late. That said, I want to take a trip to Oregon now.
