GameStop
Closing of stores in 2020: At least 320.
GameStop, like a player aiming at enemy targets, picks off store locations that it feels are too close to each other and do not support sales. “We will continue our work to de-densify our global store fleet in 2020,” analysts were told by Jim Bell, the chief financial officer, on a recent conference call. That was after the world’s largest video game retailer reported a 19.4 percent decrease in revenue last year at its more mature stores.
GameStop found itself in the middle of controversy in recent months when it insisted that its stores were “necessary” and kept them open longer than other chains during coronavirus lockdowns. The stores then made it possible for customers to pick up online orders at the entrance, but workers said they had no adequate security. The organization told The Boston Globe in a statement that workers were “assured that if they are not happy, they do not have to work.”
