Private information should remain private for a reason. Just because you don’t know the consequences of giving out your SSN doesn’t mean other people won’t, either. In fact, just handing out your nine-digit SSN to total strangers can mean losing out on income and tax refunds.
It’s strange that people don’t know this. And how come they don’t automatically assume that their unique SSN doesn’t hold any value? The next time we hear from the OP, they’re probably going to hand out their credit card number, too. You know what? We’re going to follow their social media account, just in case they have another lapse of judgment.
