TV used to have a very different kind of celebrity. The TV hosts were the people running the show and, more often than not, your weeknight routine. Game shows and talk formats turned them into household names, whether they were cracking jokes, interviewing A-listers, or keeping a studio audience in line with a single raised eyebrow. Over time, they shaped how entertainment felt at home, setting the rhythm for decades of television culture. Spanning the 1960s and early 2000s, here’s a rewind of personalities who defined the small screen. Stick around until the end because a few entries might surprise you.

#1: Ed Sullivan (September 28, 1901 – October 13, 1974)

Ed Sullivan never planned to become one of TV’s biggest names. He started as a newspaper sportswriter and Broadway columnist in New York before CBS handed him a Sunday night variety program in 1948. Over the next 23 years, The Ed Sullivan Show introduced viewers to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Supremes, and dozens of comedians, dancers, and performers who later became major stars. Sullivan hosted the program until CBS canceled it in 1971. He stepped away from TV after the show’s final broadcast and passed away three years later at age 73.
