#13: Wild Cherry – “Play That Funky Music” (1976)

The 1976 disco song “Play That Funky Music” soared to the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after its release, transforming Wild Cherry from a struggling hard rock band to disco legend. Their turnaround was sparked by a heckler’s challenge to embrace the funk. Rob Parissi, Wild Cherry’s frontman, was inspired by a heckler’s taunt to reinvent the band as funk icons. Despite the meteoric rise “Play That Funky Music” gave them, it remained their solitary chart-topping masterpiece.
