#5: Sergeant Stubby
Corporal Robert Conroy found a stray pit bull terrier mix during military training at Yale University in 1917. He smuggled the animal to Europe on a troop ship during World War I. The dog joined the 102nd Infantry Regiment in French trenches, where he participated in four offensives and 17 battles. Stubby alerted soldiers to incoming gas shells and located wounded men in the field. General John Pershing personally awarded the brave canine a gold medal for his military service in 1921.
