#21: Apollo
The New York City Police Department assigned a German Shepherd named Apollo to its K-9 unit in 1994. Apollo and his handler, Peter Davis, completed advanced search and rescue training. The team arrived at the World Trade Center site on September 11, 2001, just 15 minutes after the buildings collapsed. Apollo became the first rescue dog on the scene and worked 18 hours a day for weeks to locate survivors. The American Humane Association awarded him a medal to represent the efforts of all search dogs.
