#17: Gander
The Royal Rifles of Canada picked up a giant Newfoundland dog named Pal in 1941 and promptly gave him a much tougher name: Gander. When the regiment shipped out to Hong Kong during World War II, Gander went along for the ride, serving as an oversized, four-legged guardian. He kept watch over the troops, barking warnings at enemy soldiers in the darkness. During a fierce battle in December 1941, a grenade landed near a group of wounded Canadians. Without hesitation, Gander snatched it up in his mouth and dashed toward enemy lines, sacrificing himself to save them.
